SONG: Angels From the Realms of Glory …

“Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar; seek the great Desire of nations; ye have seen his natal star”  ~ verse of Angels From the Realms of Glory

About two centuries ago, James Montgomery penned the words to the song Angels From the Realms of Glory. You can see much more HERE about this song (and its author).  This YouTube link has St. Peters Anglican Church, Château d’Oex singing this song.

The word “Angel” reminds many of us of that “famous” angel…. Clarence from the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” Here’s the initial meeting of Clarence and George and here’s the wonderful ending, including the lines “Please God, I want to live again” and “Every Time a Bell Rings an Angel Gets His Wings.”

POSSIBLE ACTIONS:

  • Can you enjoy a little ‘wisdom of Clarence’ from someone in your life?  [If you hear a bell ring maybe that person has earned their wings?]
  • Is there an opportunity today for you to be a little angelic by “listening for” someone who may be a little troubled or discombobulated, the way Clarence listened for George in the movie?

Enjoy the day, periodically leaving contemplations for the Spirit’s stirring!

Bag of Rocks …

“You just never know the bag of rocks the other is carrying” ~ Leland Davis

December 15th’s “Heavy Backpacks” devotional in SoSA’s The Gift of the PRESENT (HERE) includes a touching story about a grandfather and grandson on a hike. That the grandson would carry those rocks – and then “allow” his grandfather to do so – was a wonderful reminder of the quote above.

Our buddy Lee Davis was incredibly wise. As his quote above suggests, in spite of what outward appearances show, many people in our midst are undergoing deep challenges. The rocks they carry may feel like boulders to them, far too much for any grandfather/grandson pair to shoulder.

Yet, we have the opportunity to lighten the load. We can share the load with God through prayer and meditation. Invariably others in our midst are willing to help carry the backpack as well. Plus, we can help ourselves by not bringing tomorrow’s issues along. As the devotional author says…

But too often, as the Lord warns, we carry tomorrow’s problems when today’s problems are heavy enough. And, yes, no one ever has an empty backpack.

Enjoy the day, filled with deep breaths, lightened backpacks and the Spirit’s stirring!

The Here and Now …

“Be still and know that I am God.” ~ Psalm 46:10

The Advent devotional The Gift of the PRESENT (downloadable version HERE, plus email option) for December 12th is entitled “The Here and Now.” The author mentions that their solution for remaining present is to begin morning devotions with Psalm 46:10 (above.) Maybe worth a try for tomorrow morning? 🙂

In a season that seems to be filled with action, isn’t it nice sometimes just to savor a few deep breaths while enjoying where you are and being mindful? During those “be still” moments, so much can invade, including large measures of gratitude.

Enjoy the day, filled with deep breaths and the Spirit!

Nativity Scenes …

Creches (nativity scenes) from all over the world are displayed on the internet – available as links HERE – thanks to the University of Dayton. Along with the visuals is some commentary on each. This one HERE from Togo, West Africa is a special reminder of the opportunity that all creatures can celebrate, and do it with presence, presents and music! This line resonates:

Welcoming in joy the “giver of life, ” we honor life and yearn for immortality.

Tradition has it that Saint Francis of Assisi, then a Deacon, created the first crèche in 1223 when he created a living nativity scene (one source of this is the website HERE )

For those who display nativity scenes, the visual is a nice reminder of welcoming love into our world. May we do that again today and in the days that follow…

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

P.S. the CP Christmas playlist on Youtube continues to get new material and is HERE should you want to listen to more…Isn’t that a reason to rejoice, pray and give thanks?

SONG: All is Well …

Are Christmas songs putting you in the mood for the holiday? This Guideposts article discusses how the author found peace in an unlikely Christmas song. That song – All is Well (sung in this link by Carrie Underwood and Michael W. Smith) – has a beautiful melody and the “all is well” message promotes calm in the midst of stress.

Highlighting “Christmas songs” will continue for the next few weeks.  For many of us, these songs help in Christian understanding of the season and also evoke important emotions.

POSSIBLE ACTIONS: think of a favorite Christmas song…

  • search for that song on the internet using the song title plus “youtube” -> it’ll likely bring up several versions that may prompt your listening enjoyment
  • consider sending along that favorite song (and any memories and/or commentary you might share) to salong_now @ yahoo.com  -> perhaps that will prompt a CP posting about that song during this or a future Christmas season? 🙂

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

All is Well…

Behaviors Helping to Make Straight …

“In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”  ~ Isaiah 40: 3-5

Do you ever have those wilderness moments, expressed above in the book of Isaiah? “How God, can I make any sense of what to do given these circumstances?”

For those studying the climate crisis, there’s a chance it can feel pretty wilderness-like, with plenty of desert, uneven ground, rough places, etc..

A recent Washington Post article provides wisdom that could easily have come from such pilgrims of the wilderness experience. shares thoughts about how we can help “make straight” such a situation relating to climate in the article “The surprisingly simple way to convince people to go green” (HERE)

Fact is, this article suggests it’s less about sharing facts and more about living the change. Sounds a little biblical, doesn’t it?

Perhaps by living more of a creation care approach to our earth, we’ll influence some of the “making straight” efforts we desire in this earth for the next generations.

Potential Activities
  • Consider reading Michael J. Coren’s full article and sharing it with a friend(s)
  • Any new “making straight” behaviors come to mind as you ponder opportunities to show creation care to those around you? (checking out page 12 of the document HERE from Smithsonian provides approachable, wonderful ideas)
May we in our days ahead find actions to more richly show our care of – and appreciation of – climate and The Gift of the Present, with less worrisome focus on the future and the past…

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

The Gift of the PRESENT (Day 1) …

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (New International Version)

Focus begins on the Advent devotional The Gift of the PRESENT (downloadable version HERE, plus email option). We are most grateful to Society of St. Andrew for providing this resource!

Today’s author, Chris Suerdieck, provides commentary about afflictions and still thanking God. Chris mentions:

“Advent is a reminder not to worry about tomorrow. Certainly, I am learning that no amount of worrying will change present circumstances.”

Isn’t that a reason to rejoice, pray and give thanks?

May we in our days ahead learn to more richly enjoy The Gift of the Present with less worrisome focus on the future and the past…

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

The Gift of the PRESENT …

This upcoming Sunday brings us to a new church year and the beginning of Advent. New friends at Society of St. Andrew have a wonderful message by way of their website moniker: https://endhunger.org/

The congregation of MWPC were recently introduced to Society of St. Andrew by way of the Advent devotional The Gift of the PRESENT (downloadable version HERE, plus email option). CP will be periodically sharing snippets of this guide so please consider following along.

During this time, synchronicities will likely become clear to us, including

  • focus on hungers
  • impact of St. Andrew on the faith
  • book messages consistent in The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

While preparing for another Advent season, may reminders of The Gift of the PRESENT be with us regularly!

Come, Live in the Light… [that message in song is HERE – we dare you to watch/listen to this one and NOT be inspired by the energy of the singers and music 🙂 ]

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

Nothing to Protect …

Many of us have just experienced Thanksgiving and the joys of togetherness with family and friends! Yet, we know that this time of year can also bring seasons of want for those around us…

The “Nothing to Protect” message HERE from  Franciscan Press’ Minute Meditations is a good one on the heels of this holiday. Especially noteworthy is the opening line:

“Compassion flourishes when we have nothing to protect and everything to share.”

Coming away from Thanksgiving times strengthened and ready for the upcoming Advent season, the Nothing to Protect imagery is fantastic. May we be equipped, energetic and ready to give this language of love to all, with our mouths, eyes, ears, hearts, hands, feet and all…

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!

“The Hub:” refuse, reuse, recycle …

This past Sunday, those staying after MWPC worship for The Hub presentation were blessed by the experience.

Their “Triple-R message?”

  • Refuse.
  • Reuse.
  • Recycle.

By limiting our consumption we ultimately require less and possibly influence others, right? And if all world residents could do more of this, there’s less production, less use of natural resources, fewer tons going into landfills, etc..

Where can you make such contributions to the Creator’s earth? Perhaps many of us in the Cincinnati area will make use of The Hub. You can check out much more about them HERE

In closing out this post, the song “Will You Come and Follow Me” comes to mind… A nice reminder for us to be examples of such Triple-R efforts!

Enjoy the day, filled with the Spirit!
